Know before you renovate

Popcorn Ceiling Asbestos Testing

If your ceiling texture predates 1990 and you are planning to scrape, paint, or repair it, arrange professional sampling before work begins.

A trained inspector can collect a sample of the ceiling texture and send it to an accredited laboratory. Standard results typically take 2–5 business days; rush service may be available.

Do not sand or scrape suspected asbestos-containing ceiling texture. Discuss your renovation plans and the age of the home when arranging the inspection.

Plan the next step around your project

Before requesting an assessment, note the approximate age of the home, which materials your work will disturb, and any renovation or closing deadline. Ask what areas will be sampled, which laboratory will analyse the samples, and what the written report will cover.

A test result relates to the material sampled. It does not automatically establish the condition of every ceiling, layer of flooring, or section of attic insulation in the building. Discuss the planned work with the inspector so the scope of the assessment fits the project.

If asbestos is confirmed, request an itemized removal quote and clarify containment, disposal, and any clearance requirements. If removal is not recommended, ask how the material should be managed before future maintenance or renovations.
